“It amazes me how few of us know about how a car works even though cars are such a common and important part of the world,” says ACC Automotive Technology student Kelly Anderson. “Understanding how each car works individually and as a whole, and then being able to adjust and fix those systems to keep the car running smoothly is a fun and exciting job.”
After serving 21 years in the US Army, Anderson enrolled at ACC and began pursuing a degree in automotive engineering.
“My teachers gave me good training in the classroom and in the shop,” he says. “They also gave me the training I needed. The extra time and effort that motor coaches are willing to put into their students to succeed is beyond my expectations. “

Students in the program also gain hands-on experience with industry experts. Beginning in Spring 2018, ACC will offer additional certification services through a new partnership with Honda/Acura. The Honda Professional Automotive Career Training (PACT) program provides students with hands-on experience in vehicle maintenance, inspection and maintenance. The two-year program includes 10 different Honda and Acura certifications taught by Honda-certified instructors, and the opportunity to earn at least two Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
“This experience, along with my education in automotive engineering, gives me a solid foundation to build on as I pursue my goal of becoming an automotive engineer,” he says. Anderson has already put the training industry to good use through a short-term job with Honda.
After Anderson graduates in December 2017, he wants to work for a non-profit organization that provides free/low-cost care and rehabilitation to those in need.
“Transportation is important in our society, and I believe that the lack of reliable transportation can cause a person to be unable to stay at work,” he says.
