Automotive Technician Schools – If you’re considering a career in an auto repair shop, here’s the good news: Your apprenticeship won’t cost you as much as a brand new Corvette. But don’t expect your education to be free either.
If you’re seriously considering entering the auto repair field, it’s wise to consider costs first. After all, education these days is very expensive, generally for any subject.
Automotive Technician Schools
And in this career field, you want to find a school that will allow you to complete your education quickly so that you can find a job in the automotive industry and earn a solid salary.
Automotive Technician, Auto Mechanic Schools, Classes, Programs
Today’s automotive technicians are trained to inspect, service, and repair a variety of vehicles that run on gasoline, electricity, or even alternative fuels. Mechanics wishing to specialize in diesel-powered vehicles must receive specific training and usually enroll in a separate training program.
The process of becoming an automotive technician can begin through a vocational program in high school. Or the path can begin in college, where you can earn a college-level certificate or pursue an associate degree program.
The estimates below can help you determine what you can afford for the type of career opportunity in this field.
These programs typically cost around $1,000 or less. Some schools offer online automotive technician correspondence courses for around $750. You may also need to consider other costs such as textbooks, study guides, online exams, and other resources.
Automotive Engineering Training
These courses can be completed in six months – or up to two years – entirely through distance learning.
Expect to pay $6,000 to $20,000 in tuition and fees for automotive engineering certificate programs. With more variety in how these programs are set up, you can pay less for a basic certification or pay more for one that includes specialized training on a specific brand, technology or device.
Associate degree programs in automotive technology typically cost between $10,000 and $25,000. Tuition at automotive schools can vary widely depending on demand and the reputation of the associate degree program. As with other college programs, sometimes you pay extra for the name or accolade of a particular educational institution.
Examples of certifications include automotive/light truck, collision and refinish, service consulting, and parts. ASE certification tests are $47 (or $94 for advanced-level tests) plus a $34 registration fee.
Automotive Technology Training Degree Program
For example, Michigan auto mechanics must pass a license test for any type of repair they perform. Exams are $6 each and there is a $25 fee for the certification application.
What does your education cost you – apart from tuition fees? Online certificate programs often include automotive tools and related study materials as part of their fees. For courses that can be attended in person, your instruction will include classroom lectures, instruction, and training with equipment.
As with any college-level course or certificate program, you should expect additional fees for books, equipment, and other enrollment costs that can add $1,000 to $3,000 to the overall cost of the program. This should be considered before you register so you don’t have any surprises!
Living away from home—if you never live alone—can add significantly to your college budget, too. For example, room and board can add $10,000 or more to your annual expenses.
