Best Laptop With Fastest Processor – The Ryzen 5 4600H is AMD’s new flagship H-series processor and is designed for high-performance and gaming laptops. There is no Ryzen 3 option in the series, so the Ryzen 5 4600H is actually the lowest-end APU on offer here.
This AMD chip is marketed towards entry-level systems, but it’s still an attractive piece of silicon to put in budget devices: You get 6 Zen 2 CPU cores and 12 threads, with a 3.0GHz base frequency and boost up to 4.0GHz. With 8MB L3 cache and standard 45W TDP.

By offering 8 cores in more expensive parts like the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H (see review), they can comfortably include six cores in mainstream laptops while maintaining good product segmentation.

You also get all the benefits of AMD’s 7nm Zen 2 architecture, which means significant performance gains over previous generation parts, improved IPC and an updated GPU design. The Ryzen 5 4600H has an integrated Vega GPU with 6 compute units clocked at 1500 MHz, but in practice most systems using this APU have a discrete GPU.
The direct competition consists of Intel’s latest 10th generation, as well as older parts that are still offered. Intel offers Core i5 options for the entry-level market, but these are only quad-core designs with moderate clock speeds. For example, the Core i5-10300H runs at up to 4.5GHz and includes 8MB of L3 cache at a TDP of 45W.
This new 10th generation part is not much different from the quad-core part before it. We get a small increase in clock speed on the Core i5-9300H, and a small increase in clock speed on the Core i5-8300H. Go back a few more generations and you’ll find a similar design used for 2015’s Core i7-6700HQ. With Intel sticking to 14nm for the time being, AMD is taking this opportunity to shake up the laptop market.
The laptop used for today’s test is an Asus TUF Gaming A15 with a Ryzen 5 4600H and GTX 1650 Ti GPU. This is a new entry-level GPU, and unfortunately we don’t have a lot of benchmark data for heavy GPU benchmarks right now, but we’ll work on that over time.
Laptop Legend: Core I9 12900hk And Rtx 3080 Ti Tested
This laptop is very similar to the TUF Gaming A15 we used in our Ryzen 7 4800H review, but with some subtle differences in internal and external design. The cooling components are a smaller unit on the right side without a fan. The GPU is an underpowered option compared to the Ryzen 7 models. Asus also ships this laptop with 8GB of single-channel memory, which leaves an empty DIMM slot for future upgrades. However, this significantly degrades out-of-the-box performance.
In other words, this laptop is decent for your average price, but we swapped out the memory for a full 16GB of dual-channel DDR4-3200 to compare with other systems. Most entry-level systems use a single DIMM, which is a bit annoying, but still a standard way to save costs.
As always when we do laptop tests, the numbers you see from other system specs are averages of results from multiple laptops with the same hardware configuration. We do apple-to-apple testing as much as possible, while eliminating bottlenecks, and unless otherwise noted, all configurations are tested at default power settings. For AMD and Intel processors, this typically means a long-term power limit of 45W.
Let’s start it off with a look at Cinebench R20 and… wait, that can’t be true. The Ryzen 5 4600H sits at the top of the charts, not at the bottom as you’d expect from an entry-level APU. With a score above 3200 points, AMD’s flagship APU beat Intel’s much higher-end CPUs like the Core i7-10875H and Core i9-9880H in the multi-core test. This is impressive because AMD parts packages only have 6 cores and Intel offers 8 cores. The superior performance of Zen 2 allows AMD to win by a double-digit margin over the 10875H, but it also has a major disadvantage.

It’s even more impressive when you pit the 4600H against the new Core i7-10750H in a core-to-core battle. AMD’s share is 27% faster in multi-threaded performance and equal to single-threaded; Considering that these chips don’t compete with each other in terms of price, that’s great.
In terms of performance, it is not much better than Ryzen Mobile, Ryzen 7 4800H works 30 percent faster with the same power consumption, as usual, clocking more cores at a lower frequency plays as well as Zen 2. Intel processors.
When we put the Ryzen 5 4600H against the rival Core i5-9300H chip, the point becomes clear. I haven’t tested the new Core i5-10300H yet, but on paper it looks very similar to the 9300H, maybe a bit faster. And in Cinebench R20, the Ryzen 5 4600H absolutely crushes the 9300H. It’s twice as fast in multithreading and about 8 percent faster in single-threading.
When we look at Cinebench R15, which almost doubles the performance of the aforementioned Core i5-9300H, we see similar impressive results. The margins continue against Intel’s other processors as well, with a 29% difference with the Core i7-10750H and a 21% difference with Intel’s older Core i7-9750H processors.

AMD also does not bother with video encoding performance. In Handbrake, the Ryzen 5 4600H beats the Core i5-9300H by 65 percent. To show the limit of what the Core i5-9300H can encode in 68 minutes, the Ryzen 5 4600H does it in just 41 minutes.
This puts the 4600H right next to the Intel Core i7-10875H in terms of handbrake performance, which is impressive considering the huge price difference between the 4600H notebooks and the 10875H notebooks.
AMD continues to produce big numbers in anything multithreaded, like Blender. The 4600H is twice as fast as Intel’s Core i5-9300H and more than 30 percent faster than Intel’s current six-core offering.
Ryzen also performs well when compiling code. For the GCC build, the Ryzen 5 4600H is 50% faster than the Core i5-9300H and has a significant lead over Intel’s six-core products. This GCC build has both multithreaded and single-threaded components, but if we’re not completely single-threaded, AMD gets double-digit performance gains.

The Ryzen 5 4600H also performs well for the Chromium build using Google’s recommended settings. That’s ~57% faster than Intel’s quad-core rival, but the margins are a bit thinner than the hexa-core parts. The Ryzen 5 4600H is 8 percent faster than the Core i7-10750H and about 20 percent faster than the Core i7-9750H.
Moving on to short-term workloads, Microsoft Excel is the first good look at how AMD performs against Intel with the same L3 cache size. The Ryzen 5 4600H and Core i5-9300H both have 8MB of L3 cache, and we see AMD deliver similar margins to the other tests, with a 45% performance advantage. But once you move to an Intel processor with 16MB of cache, this heavy Excel workload shifts slightly in Intel’s favor. AMD almost compensates for the shortcomings of the cache with the high efficiency of the processor core.
As seen in PCMark’s performance test, this represents a faster performance than Excel on lighter performance workloads, but AMD still holds the lead thanks to its superior single-threaded performance. We see a 10% margin over the Core i5-9300H, and about a 7% difference between the Core i7-10750H and the 9750H.
Then for general computing for things like browsing the web and loading apps, AMD has a small edge here too, with its six-core H-series processors. At worst, we get performance on par with the Core i7-10750H, which is pretty cool.

7-Zip is another workload that generally works well on AMD processors. The Ryzen 5 4600H is significantly faster than the Core i5-9300H in this test, and we see a 20-25 percent advantage over Intel’s six-core CPUs in decompression. Compression is another story, easily beating the AMD Core i5. but it just can’t keep up with what Core i7 has to offer.
MATLAB R2020a is a tool widely used by engineers. The Ryzen 5 4600H is 28 percent faster than Intel’s four cores, and 7 percent faster than the Core i7-10750H.
The weakest result for Ryzen is Adobe Acrobat PDF export. In this single-threaded test, the 4600H is slightly slower than the Core i5-9300H, and that margin increases with Intel’s higher-clocked parts like the Core i7-10750H.
AMD remains the fastest processor for AES cryptography. It’s a hardware-accelerated feature on modern processors, and AMD has a better engine for it, putting it 30 percent behind rival laptop processors from Intel.
