Create Own Vpn Server – People are (rightly) worried about their privacy since the Senate voted to allow ISPs to share their private data with advertisers. While protecting your privacy is important, that doesn’t mean you should sign up for a VPN service and tunnel all your internet traffic through VPN servers.
What the heck is a VPN? I have already written an article that explains VPN using simple concepts and even compares VPNs to movie trailers.

But if you want a quick list, when you connect your computer or phone to a VPN server, you establish an encrypted tunnel between your device and this server. No one can see what’s going on in the middle of this tunnel, not even your ISP.

And yet it does not allow it to be anonymous. It’s just shifting the risk to the VPN tunnel, as the VPN company can see
As a side note, many websites now rely on HTTPS to establish a secure connection between your browser and the website you are visiting, too. You should put HTTPS in every extension to make sure you use HTTPS as much as possible.
But VPNs can come in handy from time to time. Sometimes you cannot access a website on the public network because it is blocked. Or maybe you’re traveling to China and want to access your Gmail account. In these cases, it’s all about minimizing risk while using a VPN.
As Woz commented on my previous VPN article before the Senate debacle, you can run your own VPN server:
How To Set Up Your Own Vpn Server Using Algo
But if you can’t trust your home connection or you have slow upload speed on your home connection, it’s not really useful.
I’ve been working around with Algo VPN, a set of scripts that allow you to set up a VPN in the cloud in a very short time, even if you don’t know much about development. I have to say that I am very impressed with the Trail of Bits method.
I have created VPN servers on a DigitalOcean server, an Amazon Web Services instance and a Scaleway server. I was able to connect to all of these VPNs from my Mac and iPhone a few minutes later.
Algo VPN automates the VPN installation process, eliminating the need to SSH into a server and run complex command lines.

It takes three command lines to install dependencies on your computer. After that, you should log in to a cloud provider like DigitalOcean and run the Algo VPN setup wizard in your terminal. I will not explain the installation process as it can be changed after I publish this post, but everything is explained in the official GitHub repository.
On DigitalOcean you don’t have to create and configure your own server. Algo VPN does that for you as it uses the DigitalOcean API to create a server and install everything.
At the end of the setup wizard you will get some files on your local hard drive. For example, on macOS, double-clicking the configuration profile adds the VPN server to your network settings and connects you to your VPN server. You don’t need to install a VPN client, it works natively on macOS and iOS.
Running your own VPN server doesn’t mean you’re secure online, either. Again, it shifts the risk through the tunnel to the cloud hosting provider.

If you’re using Algo VPN on a Microsoft Azure instance, the NSA can still ask Microsoft for more information about you if they think you’re a bad guy. Microsoft has your billing information.
But there is one thing about Algo VPN – you can use it to set up disposable VPNs. You can start a new VPN server and connect to this VPN in a few minutes. Once done, you can simply delete your instance and pretend the VPN server doesn’t exist.
It is much cheaper than subscribing to a VPN service as you can expect to pay around $0.006 per hour of use or even less with free credit. And you have better performance because you don’t share your VPN server with other VPN users. For example, I have amazing network performance from my AWS VPN server:
While Algo VPN makes it easy to set up a VPN server on DigitalOcean, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, I also tried using it with Scaleway to see if it could be used on each hosting provider. And it works flawlessly on the smallest Ubuntu cloud server.
How To Set Up A Vpn Manually
If you have some technical knowledge, I don’t see why you should sign up with a commercial VPN service after playing with Algo VPN. I trust myself not to give my data to the authorities (duh). I don’t necessarily trust the Amazons and Googles of the world when they fight for my privacy, but I know they won’t sell my guest data to third party advertisers and scammers. I’m not too confident about my personal information on their customer services, but that’s a topic for another article. I have many Linux machines in my home. Previously, when I needed SSH access to these devices, I set up port forwarding on my router to each of these devices. It is a difficult process of activating the port message and then turning it off again after using it. It is also difficult to remember the port number forwarded for a particular device. But now I’ve found a cool way to get SSH access to all my home computers without setting up port forwarding or remembering port numbers, and most importantly, I can address my home computers with local subnet IP addresses regardless where I am from I connect the internet.

The basic idea to do this work is that we make the first SSH connection to our home computer. If we use this connection as a tunnel, we can connect to all the computers in the house by addressing them with the local subnet address (for example 192.168.x.x). So the top levels are:
1) On the remote system, open Putty and enter the IP address or Dynamic DNS (DDNS) name in the Hostname field. Select “SSH” as the connection type. Port 22 will be selected, which can be left alone unless you are running the SSH service on another port. Note: Although your putty screen may appear slightly different from the one shown here due to version differences, the basic steps are still the same.
Source port: 3000 (this is the port our proxy is listening on, this port can be changed to any but with a number greater than 1024)
4) In the left navigation bar, scroll up and click Session. You will see the settings entered in step (1). Now we can save all connection settings. Add a name for this connection in the Save Sessions text box and click Save.

5) Click Open to connect to the home computer and enter the login and password information for the remote computer. This user does not have to be the root user, but must be a user with network access on the remote computer. This completes the putty setup. Now you have a typical tunnel connection from the remote computer to one of the home computers. Now we can connect to any home computer.
6) Open another putty session. In the navigation pane, select the proxy options. In the typical options on the right, enter only the following information. Do not change other settings.
7) In the navigation pane, click the Session option. Enter a name in the Save Sessions text box. Do not enter any information in the Host Name field. Now click on “Save”. Now we have a model connection session with our agent.
8) Now enter the local subnet IP address of a device at home and click Open. The connection goes through a proxy tunnel and is connected directly to the home computer. Similarly, you can connect to another home computer by opening putty and loading the created template and typing in the computer’s local subnet IP address.
