Expat Jobs In Indonesia – Foreign nationals who want to work and stay in Indonesia can choose from different types of work and residence permits depending on the type of work, qualifications and preferences. The work permit (IMTA) is issued by the Ministry of Manpower and the residence permit (ITAS / ITAP) is issued by Immigration. In this article, we provide an overview of the four main types of work and residence permits in Indonesia.
One Month/Emergency Work Permit (IMTA) and Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) must be sponsored by a company, valid for a maximum of 30 days and non-renewable. At the end of the 30-day acceptance period, the foreign worker must leave Indonesia. This type of work and residence permit does not require a cancellation procedure (known as EPO), which means that the foreigner can leave the country immediately.

The Short Term Work Permit (IMTA) and Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) must be sponsored by an organization and will last for a maximum of two to six months. Short-term work and residence permits such as emergency work and residence permits are also non-renewable. However, when the permit expires, the foreigner must cancel his Work Permit (IMTA), Residence Permit (ITAS) and Temporary Residence Permit Certificate (SKTTS).
The application process is similar to the long-term work and residence permit, but the documentation requirements are not as strict. Below we have listed the main advantages of a short-term work and residence permit compared to a long-term work and residence permit.
Long Term Work Permit (IMTA) and Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) must be sponsored by a company and valid for seven to a maximum of 12 months. This work and residence permit can be renewed up to five times and each renewal period is a maximum of 12 months. After the permit expires, or if the foreign national ceases to work for the sponsoring organization, the foreign national must cancel his Work Permit (IMTA), Residence Permit (ITAS) and Temporary Residence Permit Certificate (SKTTS).

This type of work and residence permit is used for foreign workers who work permanently in Indonesia (long-term project basis) and foreign workers who want to stay and work in Indonesia for a longer period of time and meet all the requirements to obtain a long-term permit. There is a work permit and a residence permit.
The most important benefit of a long work and residence permit can be extended up to five times. The foreigner is not forced to leave the country during the extension. During each extension, the foreign national is required to surrender his passport for one week, process the ITAS stamp in the passport at the local immigration office, and have a biometric session at the local immigration office.
A Permanent Resident Permit (ITAP) is valid for five years and must be renewed every five years. The Permanent Resident Permit (ITAP) can be renewed indefinitely, with each renewal period of five years. While the ITAP is valid for five years, other permits must be renewed more often:
The Indonesian government has set the following minimum requirements for foreigners to qualify for ITAP sponsored by a company.

An Overview Of The Types Of Sponsored Work And Stay Permits In Indonesia
As you probably know, Indonesia is a developing country. Most of the population lives in relatively rural areas, and even large cities have large tracts of low-income districts. Unemployment is relatively high, and gainful employment is difficult to find for ordinary locals.
One of the solutions, from the government’s perspective, is to limit the number of foreigners who can otherwise be held by Indonesians. Foreign nationals employed in Indonesia must be experts in the field; That is, they have a university degree and five years of experience or a title that reflects their higher position on the company ladder.
In addition, companies pay a tax of 100 dollars per month for a foreigner, which is a staggering sum in many cities. Most companies willing to hire foreigners do not face this hurdle. In fact, that money goes directly to the Human Resources Department, which is invested in job training so local residents can learn how to do it.
