These and similar words can embarrass a depressed person. This suggests that they do not deserve depression because their life circumstances do not justify it.
Not only is this unhelpful, but it puts the blame on the person, suggesting that having depression is somehow their fault.

Dr. “Try not to give advice unless they ask for it,” advises Dowd. What they really need is someone to listen.
