IPVanish is a popular virtual private network that is fast and secure enough for regular VPN use. I was impressed with the user interface and ease of configuring the VPN. I also like that IPVanish offers phone support and allows you to connect an unlimited number of devices to one account at once.
IPVanish is a great choice for beginners and casual VPN users, but I don’t recommend it for serious VPN use due to some issues I’ve found. If you are a whistleblower or dissident, or if you want to use a VPN to avoid censorship in a country where VPNs are restricted or illegal, you should look elsewhere.
Otherwise, IPVanish offers an impressive service, especially for new users looking for general online privacy. If you’re interested in a VPN but aren’t sure where to start, IPVanish is a good place to start.

I completed the final round of IPVanish speed tests in March from my location in Ohio using the OpenVPN protocol.
Overall, IPVanish’s average speed improved slightly compared to the previous round of tests conducted by Rae Hodge in her 2021 IPVanish review. This time, the average speed loss was 58%, compared to the previous 65%. My total speed average without VPN is 363.64 megabits per second. With the VPN, my speed dropped to an average of 152.34 Mbps through IPVanish servers located in New York, UK, France, Germany, Australia and Singapore.
The average speed in New York was 258.17 Mbps, while the average speed in the UK was 119.55 Mbps. Slow speeds are to be expected from VPN servers located at sea, but this sharp drop in speed when connecting to the UK was disappointing; Customers expect better performance from servers in high-demand locations like the UK. Speeds on UK servers were erratic and inconsistent, fluctuating between 215.43 Mbps and 57.3 Mbps.
My average speed on IPVanish’s Australian servers came in at an impressive 183.72 Mbps – beating smooth speeds in the UK, despite being nearly 6,000 miles away from my location.

The average speed in France and Germany was 165.49 Mbps, which was also disappointing. The significant loss was mainly due to the poor performance of the French server.
Singapore recorded the lowest speed at 35.61 Mbps, which was disappointing considering Australia’s speed was quite impressive.
IPVanish isn’t the fastest VPN, but it’s still fast and on par with other big names like ExpressVPN – which saw a 51.8% speed loss in recent tests – and NordVPN at 53%.
Bottom line: IPVanish can give you enough speed for casual internet browsing, HD streaming and video calling.
Ipvanish Review 2022: Is It Fast, Safe And Good For Streaming?
During testing, I used IPVanish’s Fast Connect feature, which claims to connect you to the best servers on the IPVanish network based on current performance. But if I connect manually I will probably get better speed.
IPVanish has the ability to quickly connect up front when launching the desktop app. In three consecutive drop-down menus, the default option is labeled Best Available for Country, City, and Server. You can also change each offer separately. This feature is here so that you can easily and automatically connect to the server with the most optimal performance available when you connect. However, I found the results disappointing.
UK and France speeds were inconsistent and the speed drop was drastic, even though I was connecting to the best servers available in those countries. So I manually connected to another server in France which was showing bad user traffic and low ping speed. My speed increased fivefold: I got about 55Mbps when connected to the best available server designated in France; When I manually connected to a French server with low traffic I got about 270Mbps. Likewise, the best available feature matched me with the 45th best server in the UK in terms of traffic load.
When asked how the fast connection feature works, IPVanish said that the best available option depends on the algorithm used to connect to the server.

“We use algorithms to determine the closest location to a user, we have additional algorithms to filter out servers with heavy loads or unusually high pings to ensure the best possible server is selected,” IPVanish said in an email. “There are also algorithms to randomly select the best possible servers to avoid saturation.”
That sounds good in theory, but that’s not what an IPVanish customer service representative told me when I took my testing concerns to live chat support. The representative said that the popularity of the feature creates a high load on a server, “so it is better to choose the closest server with the [lowest] ping for better performance and speed.”
To be fair, I got excellent speeds in other locations using the best available connection option, which suggests the algorithm can sometimes work as intended. But it fails to be credible on many occasions – too bad. The quick connect feature should enhance your product experience. Instead, it can trick you into thinking you’re getting great performance from your VPN when you’re not.
When it comes to security and privacy, IPVanish is a mixed bag: it helps protect you from hackers and snoopers, but don’t rely on it to protect you from outside entities out to destroy you. Using a VPN.

This is a concern because your actual online activity may not be disclosed, it could expose your VPN usage to websites, school or business network administrators, and any government officials. It can also make it harder to bypass geoblocks on streaming sites. This also happened when I enabled the OpenVPN Scramble feature.
After this IPVanish review was published, IPVanish Vice President of Strategy and Product Subbu Sthanu argued that consumers cannot hide their VPN usage because VPNs’ IP address ownership is often publicly verified.
