Quiz To Know If You Have Anxiety – Whether it’s meeting tight deadlines at work, trying to meet family demands, or worrying about politics, we all feel stressed, anxious, and worried at times. But what if these feelings aren’t just occasional? According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression, which can be a serious and debilitating health problem rather than a normal and temporary response to life’s challenges. Chronic stress can also negatively affect all systems in your body and even lead to diseases such as heart disease. (See my post here for more information on the effects of chronic stress.) Although anxiety is a normal response to stress, when it becomes extreme, it can interfere with daily life. Anxiety disorders are so common that the National Institute of Mental Health reports that up to 18 percent of American adults have them. How do you know if you are one of the millions with mental health issues? If you’re interested in a depression/stress/anxiety test, here are 5 ideas to help you diagnose yourself.
You probably already know that people with depression sometimes struggle to get out of bed, but insomnia is also a common symptom of depression, chronic stress, and anxiety. Take a look at your sleeping habits. It’s perfectly normal to occasionally wake up early or sleep through the night, but excessive sleep or insomnia can be a symptom of a larger mental health problem. If you have a Fitbit or other fitness tracker that automatically records sleep duration and quality, taking a closer look at your numbers may reveal an irregular and unhealthy pattern.

It’s nice to have a cold beer after a hard day’s work, but how often do you pour yourself a drink to take the edge off? Many people with mood disorders use alcohol to self-medicate. A study published in the November 2006 issue of the Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry found that about 22% of participants with anxiety disorders self-medicated with alcohol or other drugs, with men more likely than women. Think about what you’ve been drinking in the last two months. Do you reach for the bottle (or some other mind-altering substance) every time you feel stressed or angry? Using alcohol to cope with bad feelings can be a sign of self-medication for mood problems.

It is not uncommon for people struggling with depression to become isolated or lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Do you do things like have dinner, play golf, or watch a movie on the weekend? Do you avoid calls from family and friends? You may be withdrawn due to depression or other illnesses. On the other hand, a busy lifestyle can mean the fear of being alone with a lot of time to think. If you constantly surround yourself with people to avoid difficult thoughts, you may be hiding from a mental health condition.
When tested for depression or anxiety, many people only test for mental and emotional symptoms such as sadness and extreme anxiety. But mood disorders have many physical symptoms. Some unexpected physical symptoms of depression include persistent pain, significant weight loss, or changes in appetite. One analysis found that most people seeking depression treatment in primary care settings had only physical symptoms. Physical symptoms of anxiety can range from an upset or “nervous” stomach to chest pains, while chronic stress can cause headaches, weakness, and more. If you’re experiencing seemingly unexplained pain or digestive issues, try to zoom in to see if these physical symptoms could be related to mental health.
Self-diagnosing a mood disorder is not easy, especially if you have low self-esteem or anxiety. If you feel like you can’t do well enough on a depression/stress/anxiety test, ask a trusted loved one who has noticed changes in your mood or behavior.
