The US Department of Defense (DoD) MIL-STD-31000 standard prescribes the requirements for preparing a technical data package (TDP), which consists of one or more TDP elements and related TDP data management products. The purpose of the TDP is to provide an official technical description of an item that is clear, complete and accurate and in a form and format suitable for its intended use. TDP consists of elements, which are described by level and type and may have associated metadata and additional technical data.
The 3D PDF Consortium and now the PDF Association’s 3D PDF TWG are developing guidelines to support MIL-STD-31000.

Say you want to run anyway and have a choice between two roads: one is well paved and will take you halfway to your destination, but you may have to pay. Many tolls along the way, while others are under construction, will still get you where you want to go. Which path do you choose? Unfortunately, many companies are currently in this position regarding Technical Data Packages (TDPs) as they try to determine how best to create content using Model Driven Definitions (MBD) in a Model Driven Enterprise (MBE).
Today’s technical data packages are likely based on templates that draw information from sources such as part files, PDM (Product Data Management) systems, and other databases. When not in a model-based enterprise, this is 1D or 2D data that usually goes directly into a PDF file or as part of a process that generates a PDF from a document format such as Excel or Word. What is missing is the relationship between the 3D model and the 3D data and other data in the package. Adobe 3D PDF files seem to be the right choice to support the packaging of model-based enterprise technical data, given that PDF is already part of the solution and allows 3D data to be translated into native PDF file format. You can also add a STEP file as an attachment to the package if you want to include additional geometry data. So what’s wrong with that approach?
This kind of process creates and translates several derivative formats that all need to be validated and – in the case of STEP integration – managed after creation. 3D PDF will also add JavaScript data to the 3D PDF which can introduce security issues in some workflows. If your company has a current Teamcenter PLM system, you already have the 3D data needed for TDP as 3D JT data.
Weapon Technical Data Pack
JT is the ISO standard for visualization and collaboration. It is a global standard for the automotive industry and has been widely adopted in heavy machinery, transportation, consumer products, and the aerospace and marine industries. Typically, all workflows for creating a TDP will be executed from a PLM system. No need to use existing 3D JT data as model based design data for technical data packages and translate geometry, PMI, model views etc? What is missing is a way to connect the JT data to the PDF document and a way to navigate within it. JT plus PDF provides this capability using JT2Go.
Currently, Siemens does not offer out-of-the-box solutions for generating technical data packages from templates for first article inspection, work instructions, assembly instructions, etc. This is what it means when we compare a pier with a road under construction.
The battle for a de facto model-based 3D data definition will continue for years to come. While there is a lot of buzz around 3D PDF today, especially in the aerospace industry, many people overlook both the cost-effectiveness and the process involved in embarking on that path. 3D PDF will eventually create another 3D model derived from engineering data. JT should be the obvious choice for customers using Teamcenter or NX. If your company uses Teamcenter, you have already created (and hopefully validated) the JT for visualization. Validation of 3D data is required. JT is a good format for 3D visualization; It is a choice between 100% accuracy all the time or only 99% accuracy. Do you really want to risk being inaccurate 1% of the time?
If companies want 3D PDF content, they have to accept that there will be translation errors. Finding and fixing these PRC translation problems involves costs—both time and money. Many people consider the advantage of 3D PDF to be a viewing window on the first page of the PDF. However, this requires the user to continuously scroll to the beginning of the PDF to view the 3D geometry. It is a more elegant solution to have two applications, PDF and JT2Go.
What Is A Technical Data Package (tdp)?
JT Plus PDF is a simple approach to creating 3D technical data packages without creating new 3D data. A JT file is combined with a standard PDF file, then the specific content in the JT file is linked to the PDF via an easy-to-understand URI protocol. JT2Go makes it easy to generate URI strings interactively or programmatically. If a PDF file with a URI link is created manually using Word or Excel, JT2Go commands the visible JT file to attach to the PDF for free. In fact, JT2Go allows linking JT files to PDF files. JT2Go can be used to load PDF files directly or the PDF can be loaded into Acrobat Viewer and JT in a separate JT2Go session. JT2Go listens for URI preferences and responds to specified commands. Anyone can download JT2Go now from www.jt2go.com and try it right away. The short side of this story is that Siemens does not currently provide a tool to automatically generate JT Plus PDFs of any product out of the box. This situation is about to change however, and tools are available from Siemens to perform automatic generation using automatic rendering of Teamcenter visualizations.
