Angela imagines her life is very different, outside the hustle and bustle of the city, in a small house in Maine. Live, as you should—full of contentment and great love. Inspired by her friend’s Internet dating success, she signed up and found a suitor who lived in a small town in Maine. Frustrated in love, he makes a big mistake at work that leaves him unemployed and Angela packs up her life and goes to Desert Island to be with ‘her man’ and find a better life. His experiences were not close to his goal but he began to find friends in the small community and immersed himself in the passion of cooking by making bread and soup for the coffee shop where he worked and teaching cooking classes.
This is Christina Baker Kline’s third review and my favorite of her books so far, mostly because of all the food. Angela cooks like I do nel regalo as her grandmother or Nonna calls her, she likes to take the recipe and quickly make changes that make it yours. I ate the food he prepared from his recipes and his Nonna’s. I love a good start-your-life-and-change-the-end story and this book delivers. Angela is loving and Nonna is the Italian grandmother everyone loves. I really liked the wonderful group of other transplants that Angela befriended on Desert Island and enjoyed their stories. The Way Life Should Be is light chicken, not deep, but a warm, hearty, quick read to whip up a big plate of pasta or maybe a bowl of fennel salad.

There’s no shortage of food in this book – baked goods, lots of sauces, and classic Italian dishes courtesy of Angela’s Nonna. There are recipe ‘sketches’ in the book and they are written on the back, and close to a dozen actual recipes. Although I was tempted by Nonna’s Potato-Crusted Sole and Pasta e Fagioli, it was the fennel salad that won me over. ), I enjoyed it on its own as a perfect dish for a warm and cold night.
“The fennel salad is simple, I cut the bulbs into small leaves and add a large amount of Parmigiano-Reggiano shaved into slivers. lemon juice and extra olive oil dressed with vinaigrette, with mild pepper, complete the dish.”
Deb’s note: I like to add a bit of lemon juice for a bit of color and add lemon juice and zest to the salad.
Notes/Results: I love fennel and enjoyed it especially with Parmesan and lemon. There’s something about the cooling licorice / anise flavor of fennel that pairs well with the rich and salty Parmigiano-Reggiano and the tangy, fresh lemon. This salad is perfect as a starter, a side of fish if you’re like me – straight out of the mixing bowl for dinner. I will do it again.
