Being caught talking to yourself, especially if you use your own name, is the most embarrassing thing ever. And it’s no wonder – it makes you feel like you’re forgetting. Obviously, the purpose of speaking out loud is to communicate with others. But as many of us talk to ourselves, can it be normal or healthy?
What Causes People To Talk To Themselves
We actually talk quietly to ourselves all the time. I asked “where are my keys?” I don’t mean. opinion – we often have deep, deep conversations at 3am, no one wants to answer but ourselves. This inner message is really healthy, it plays a special role in making us feel good. It helps us organize our thoughts, plan actions, consolidate memories, and change thoughts. In other words, it helps us to control ourselves.

Speaking out loud can be an extension of silent inner speech, which occurs when certain motor commands fail. Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget discovered that children begin to control their actions as soon as they begin to form words. When approaching a hot place, the child often says loudly “hot, hot” and moves away. These habits continue into adulthood.
Nonhuman primates, of course, do not talk to themselves, but they have been shown to control their actions by maintaining a goal in the form of a task-specific memory. If the task is visual, such as comparing bananas, the monkey activates a different region of the prefrontal cortex than when comparing sounds in an auditory task. But when people pass the same test, they end up opening up in the same areas regardless of job type.
In an interesting study, scientists have discovered that if we don’t talk to ourselves, our brains can function like monkeys. In the experiment, the researchers asked participants to make loud sounds (“blah-blah-blah”) during visual and audio tasks. Because we can’t say two things at the same time, the frustration of these voices leaves participants unable to tell what to do in each task. Under these conditions, humans, like monkeys, display brain vision and sound for each task.
This study elegantly demonstrates that talking to ourselves is probably not the only way we control our behavior, but it is something we prefer and use by default. But that doesn’t mean we can control what we say. Indeed, there are many times when our inner words are problematic. Most of us try to stop the urge to go back to sleep when we talk to ourselves at 3am. But teaching yourself to stop thinking will trick your mind into thinking all kinds of thoughts, including your inner speech, in an almost random way.

This type of mental illness is very difficult to control, but when we are trying to achieve a goal, we seem to be stuck. For example, reading a book before going to sleep should make our mind work to relax and manage the internal message well.
But researchers have found that patients with anxiety or depression often generate “random” thoughts even when trying to complete a random task. Our mental health seems to depend on our ability to tune out thoughts related to the task at hand and focus on unrelated music. Not surprisingly, many therapies such as mindfulness focus on clearing the mind and reducing stress. When the mind is completely out of control, we enter a dream state that presents contradictions and inappropriate content, often described as mental illness.
So your inner voice helps you organize your thoughts and adapt to change, but is there anything special about speaking out loud? Why keep it to yourself if no one is listening to you?
In recent experiments conducted in our laboratory at Bangor University, Alexander Kirkham and I have shown that speaking out loud improves task control over internal language speaking. We gave 28 participants written instructions and asked them to read them either silently or aloud. We measured participants’ attention and task performance, and both improved when task instructions were read aloud.

Most of these benefits come from hearing one’s own voice, as commands seem to be better at controlling behavior than text. Our results show that even when we talk to ourselves to gain control during difficult tasks, we perform better when we do it out loud.
This helps explain why many sports professionals, such as tennis players, talk to each other during a match, often at important points in the game. “Come on in!” help them focus. Our ability to create clear self-directed statements is truly one of the best tools we have for cognitive control, and it only works better when we say it out loud.
So there you have it. Talkative baggage can be a sign of high-intelligence activity when the mind isn’t wandering. Instead of being mentally ill, it can make you smarter. The thought of a mad scientist lost in his inner world, talking to himself, can reflect the reality of a genius who uses every opportunity at his disposal to keep his brain strong.

Psychologists say that it’s normal for kids to talk to themselves out loud as they go about their day, and it shouldn’t be viewed as weird, it’s somehow not good. In general, three to five years of “self-talk” is the maximum, but can be longer. However, most parents are concerned.

“Children are exploring the world and using language just like toddlers,” says Esther Cole, a psychologist in Toronto. “This is their role; they are looking for relationships and they still behave when they do something. “
You may see your child talking to themselves while putting on their shoes, describing their day in the stroller, or sharing their feelings with their stuffed animal before bed. “They say things like, ‘Don’t be afraid of the dark.’ “Okay, I’ll give you a hug,” Cole said. “They do whatever the boss says,” he said.
Kimberly Day, a private speech researcher and assistant professor of psychology at the University of West Florida, says, “Private speech [means] can be used to understand children’s ways of self-regulation, their motivation, thoughts, and thoughts or ideas.” A study of self-talk in children of the same age found that children who were able to talk themselves through work were better able to manage their behavior and emotions when performing difficult tasks.
Similarly, Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, who studied private speech in the 20th century, saw it as a transition between social and “inner” speech. Adam Winsler, a professor at George Mason University in Virginia, found that five-year-olds were better at moving when they talked to themselves out loud (however they should be) than when they were silent.

Experts say that you shouldn’t try to stop one-on-one conversation because it helps children’s thinking and skills. “Play and learning happen at the same time,” Cole said. “If you see a three-year-old kid talking to his animals and role-playing, you’re like, ‘Why are you talking to your dinosaur?’ “This is not a real person” may be ambiguous. Another way, Cole says, is to play games that gently teach a child the difference between reality and imagination. “Take charge: ‘Do we tell the doll it’s time for us?’
