What Planet Is Known As The Red Planet – Over the decades of its mission, the Hubble Space Telescope has observed our closest planetary neighbor, Mars, documenting its seasons, terrains and storms. Hubble’s work complements that of spacecraft and landing missions to the Red Planet, making Mars the most observed world besides Earth.
NASA has been exploring Mars since the 1970s, with missions that include orbiting spacecraft and surface rovers. Hubble also studied Mars from its position in Earth’s orbit. This multi-mission approach offers valuable different ways of seeing and understanding our nearest planetary neighbor.
What Planet Is Known As The Red Planet
The images and data are usually collected when Mars is near “opposition”, fully illuminated by the Sun. Hubble shows Mars as an exceptionally stable planet, although occasionally plagued by huge dust storms, most evident in the image from 2018. A dust storm can be seen in 2001 at the upper right of the planet.
Mars Gravity Vs Earth, Temperature On The Red Planet And Everything You Need To Know After Nasa Perseverance Rover Lands
The polar cap and clouds also vary between images. The tilt of Mars towards us or away from us is evident from the visibility of the north and south polar caps. In northern winter/southern summer, the ice sheet at the North Pole can be easily seen, but the South Pole is not; the opposite happens in southern winter/northern summer.
In addition to the polar caps, the white and gray features on Mars represent clouds. In the northern summer, marked clouds appear around the north pole of Mars. Therefore, some images show polar clouds more clearly than others. The dark and light surface areas in the images are caused by different minerals, and their boundaries often correspond to the planet’s terrain.
These images of Mars come from three different cameras on Hubble, starting with the original Wide Field Camera in 1991, the updated Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) starting with the 1997 image, and finally the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) used in 2016 and 2018.
Mars is the most observed planet after Earth. Hubble offers a fascinating opportunity to observe another planet that changes over time and provide valuable insights into what makes our home planet unique and what we share in common with other worlds.

Note: Although we identify the datasets used in these visualizations, we do not store any further details or the datasets themselves on our site. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun: a dusty, cold, desert world with an atmosphere. Mars is also a dynamic planet with seasons, ice caps, canyons, extinct volcanoes and evidence that it was even more active in the past.
Mars is one of the most explored bodies in our solar system, and it is the only planet where we have sent rovers to roam the alien landscape.
Emirates Mars Mission Discovers New ‘patchy’ Proton Aurora On The Red Planet
Currently, NASA has two rovers (Curiosity and Perseverance), a lander (InSight) and a helicopter (Ingenuity) exploring the surface of Mars.
The Perseverance Rover, the largest and most advanced rover that NASA has sent to another world, landed on Mars on February 18, 2021, after a 203-day journey that covered 472 million kilometers. The Ingenuity helicopter is bound for Mars with the belly of Perseverance.
Perseverance is one of three spacecraft to reach Mars in 2021. The United Arab Emirates hopeful arrived on February 9, 2021. China’s Tianwen-1 mission arrived on February 10, 2021 and includes an orbiter, a module lander and a rover. Europe and India also have spacecraft studying Mars from orbit.
In May 2021, China became the second nation to successfully land on Mars when its Zhurong Mars Rover landed.
Mars Vs Earth
An international fleet of eight orbiters is studying the Red Planet from above, including three NASA orbiters: 2001 Mars Odyssey, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and MAVEN.
These robotic explorers have found ample evidence that Mars was much wetter and warmer, with a thicker atmosphere, billions of years ago.
If the Sun were the size of a typical front door, the Earth would be the size of a dime, and Mars would be the size of an aspirin tablet.
Mars orbits our sun, a star. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun at an average distance of about 228 million km (142 million miles) or 1.52 AU.
What Is Mars?
A day on Mars is just over 24 hours. Mars makes a complete orbit around the Sun (one year in Mars time) in 687 Earth days.
Mars is a rocky planet. Its solid surface has been altered by volcanoes, impacts, winds, crustal movement and chemical reactions.
Mars has a thin atmosphere consisting mainly of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), argon (Ar), nitrogen (N 2 ) and a small amount of oxygen and water vapor.
Various missions have visited this planet, from flybys and orbiters to rovers on the surface. The first real success of the Mars mission was the Mariner 4 flyby in 1965.
Journey To The Center Of Mars
At this time, the surface of Mars cannot support life as we know it. Current missions determine the past and future of Mars’ life potential.
Mars is known as the red planet because the iron minerals in the Martian soil rust or oxidize, causing the soil and atmosphere to appear red.

In the late 19th century, when people first noticed the canal-like features on the surface of Mars, many speculated that an intelligent extraterrestrial species lived there. This led to many stories about Mars, some of which involve invading Earth, such as in the 1938 radio drama, “The War of the Worlds”. According to an enduring urban legend, many listeners believed the story was actually news coverage of an invasion, causing widespread panic.
Why Is Mars Called The Red Planet And What Is Its Atmosphere Made Of?
Since then, countless stories have happened on Mars or explored the possibilities of its Martian inhabitants. Movies like “Total Recall” (1990 and 2012) take us to a terraformed Mars and a colony struggling without air. A Martian colony and Earth have a thorny relationship in “The Expanse” TV series and novels.
And in the 2014 novel and its 2015 film adaptation, “The Martian,” botanist Mark Watney is stranded alone on the planet and struggles to survive until a rescue mission can retrieve him.
Mars is a cold, desert world. It is half the size of the Earth. Mars is sometimes called the red planet. It is red because of the rusted iron in the soil.
Like Earth, Mars has seasons, ice caps, volcanoes, canyons and weather. It has a very thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and argon.
Earth Size Planets Found In Our Galaxy—all Hiding In Plain Sight
There are signs of ancient floods on Mars, but water now exists mostly in icy soil and thin clouds. On some marsh slopes there is evidence of liquid salt water on the floor.
NASA is hosting a briefing at 11:30 am. EDT on Sept. 15 to provide highlights of the first year and a half of the Perseverance Rover mission.
The rover discovered that the floor of the Jezero Crater is composed of volcanic rocks that have interacted with water.
When NASA put a lander and the first rover on Mars a quarter of a century ago, they changed the way we explore other worlds.
